The Rise and Fall of the ABA
Try The Athletic for FREE for 30 days: theathletic.com/tifobasketball
Founded in 1967 American Basketball Association would only last nine years. But despite the short-lived existence of the ABA, the roots of the NBA as we recognise it today emanate as much from that nine-year period as from anything within the NBA itself.
This is the story of that enduring influence...
Told by Ryan Baldi. Henry Cooke illustrates.

Disappointed that you left out the ABA, which implemented a 30-second shot clock. ABA commissioner George Mikan (the same) had brought back the old ABL's 3-point shot, which was gloriously successful. With the number of expected 3-pointers scored, the ABA figured letting players have 30 seconds to shoot would let the new league match the established NBA's scoring average, and that worked.

How good was the ABA? Of the 112 guys who played at least 1 game in their final season, 76 went on to play in the NBA. In addition to the 48 roster spots created by the merger, 28 players, the equivalent of 2 and 2/3rds teams, told existing NBA players to go home and get their shineboxes. The NBA wanted the talent in the ABA, that's why the deal was made.

no disrespect to the 80's pistons in 88 they would've lost 4-1 to the lakers had the elite years not FINALLY ended for legend kareem abdul-jabbar the passing from legend magic johnson didn't equal the scoring from kareem abdul-jabbar so the 80 82 and 87 finals mvp should've been kareem abdul-jabbar

The only thing I think is missing is a more honest sentence or two about his time in CHA & w the Nets. When not injured, we was a serviceable combo guard who still operated well out of the PNR. And he waved kobe off successfully and put kobe in his place!

The shot clock had an insane effect on the mentality on the league where the paradigm shift went from hold and stall to shoot it or loose it. Teams went from 75.6 FGA per game in 1954 to 109.4 by 1961, which is still the all time high to date btw. In the 2018-19 season I adjusted the 1960-61 pace to 2018-19 and added in factors such as 3pt shots per game, improvement in FG% and percentage of points from free throws and found that if teams in 2018-19 played at the same pace as they did in 1961 they would’ve been averaging 152ppg

🛑It’s not alleged… MJ admitted to it…saying that he did not want Isaiah on the team… and he would not play if Isaiah was… ✅The statement was recorded and also published in the book dream team… 🛑Stop protecting MJ from his lame cheating a hall of famer from a Olympic team. ✅There are absolutely no videos of no player saying that they did not want Isaiah on the team. There are in fact caught on tape recording of MJ saying he don’t want Isaiah on the team. Also, there is Scottie Pippen, MJs minion, who admitted that because of Isaiah not shaking their hands he also didn’t want Isaiah on the Olympic team. 💯 There is in-fact actual videos of the rest of the Olympic team players on the so-called dream team, who said we did not have anything against Isaiah being on the dream team. 💯 ✅So it is clear… with several players who have videos that you can Google. They all say they did not have a problem with Isaiah being on the team.. But people want to dream up 💩just because there was old issues with players in the past that they all joined together, 🧢and didn’t want Isaiah on the team that is false 🤣… and that whole protecting MJ lie is super exposed now… so don’t make yourself look stup!d.🤭Evidence is overwhelming. To MJ fans it had to be everybody that didn’t want Isaiah. 🤦🏽‍♂️The fact is that it was only Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen still crying because of a handshake in the conference finals… when later the Lakers didn’t shake the bulls hand MJ didn’t shake lakers hand either after the game the celebrated just like they should have done with the pistons instead of crying about hand shaking. 🫥 🛑Nobody on the team was asked about any players it was MJ making a unsolicited ultimatum And Chuck Daly had no say so. Because MJ was leveraging his fame and star power against another player who deserve to be on the team. MJ knew that they wanted MJ to play and if he said no, because of Isaiah MJ knew that they would choose MJ over Isaiah. That’s called cheating the game. Leveraging your fame over another player. 🤨 MJ losing to Isaiah for years and crying on the bus… complaining to the commissioner and getting rules changed to benefit him going to the basket… so MJ can finally beat the pistons but still cry about a handshake and cheat the game because of a hard shake… is just a continuation of the weakest player in the history of the NBA. Thank God MJ made hisself look even worse by trying to cement the lie into his own self glorifying documentary. MJ made a bold face lie in the trash dance saying that it wasn’t him and he never mention Isaiah’s name… but he forgot that he had a recording of him, saying Isaiah’s name… so MJ’s on arrogance made him look stupid and exposed him to be a liar, pathological liar✨✨✨🏀

This bunch of Detroit Pistons bought into the program Chuck Daily brought to the team. They exploited the then current rules, only losing their competitive advantage when the NBA simultaneously changed a hard foul into a two point and possession penalty and took a blind eye to players that traveled when driving to the basket. Those two changes and age related injuries to Thomas and Lambier took the Piston away from being in the top tier of NBA teams.
